Internet addiction?

It's studies like this that make the entire research community look like a bunch of idiots. I think if anyone's addicted to the internet it would be me. But I've gone cold turkey off the internet for two weeks before without any problems. The only symptoms I suffered were annoyance because I could upload my freaking photos or let people know how my trip was going.

> "it was incredibly difficult to recruit participants for this study, as people weren't willing to be without the internet for two weeks"

No shit, eh? Considering that most peoples work (especially the people who they would be considered internet adicts) requires them to use the internet. It's like saying it was difficult to recruit people for my study because people weren't willing to be without their desk or table for two weeks. Unless you pay me as much as I would've made in that two weeks, and then some, why should I do your study?

But at least the reg still did the story with their usual good british humour:
> "I'm starting to miss emailing my friends - I feel out of the loop," she said unloopedly.

Which OS are you?

This is good stuff, except for the OS that supposedly I am... lame!

You are OS2-Warp. You're plagued by feelings of abandonment and disgust for your backstabbing step-brother. Oh, what might have been.

CBC Online Radio

Alright, if you've ever listened to cbc radio online you should know that as of August 30 they started providing support for ONLY windows media player. They use to support realplayer and that mac streaming format as well. Their reasons for dropping support for the other two are euphemisms for laziness at best. But more likely than not they probably just have some windows zealot in middle management.

So why is this bad? It's not because microsoft is an "evil" company. Nor is it because a government corporation, whom my taxes go to, should be supporting open standards. It's because if you use linux (or plan on using it in the future) you will not be able to listen to CBC radio online. Remember these are your tax dollars paying for the service. Linux has a desktop market share of roughly 5%, soon to over take Macs if it hasn't already. Meaning roughly 1 in 20 people can't listen to CBC radio online.

I wrote them a fairly kind email last night about why it they're going to support only one format, they should at least try to pick the format that the "widest audience" (their words, not mine) could access. So please, I urge you, send them an email telling them why they should support realplayer. Even as much as we all hate Real as a company, they're still the only [popular] format that truly supports the three most popular platforms.

Oh yeah, and I should add the links:

I also just started a thread on the gentoo forums.

MT Captcha plugin

Alright, due to an undue amount of complaints and a certain someone threatening to stop blogging here, I decided to go and look for a movabletype captcha plugin. Check it out, try and post a comment now bitches!

Here's some instructions on enabling your blog to be able to use the new plugin. Does it really work? I guess we'll find out in a couple of days.

Illegal Google Fame

So I was just looking over Google's "terms of service"' and it looks like that google fame calculator I wrote the other day is actually illegal. Here's an exerpt:

You may not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system without express permission in advance from Google. Note that "sending automated queries" includes, among other things:

* using any software which sends queries to Google to determine how a website or webpage "ranks" on Google for various queries;

Whoops! Well I guess that's the second illegal thing that's on buffmuthers (at least that I can think of), besides that blatent LOTR copyright violation from the other day. The first was the picture of that Amsterdam hooker. And I really shouldn't have written "Amsterdam hooker' because now all the dumbasses who search for "Amsterdam hooker" on google are going to find this link and then start scouring the site for the picture I just mentioned. They'll also probably want to use my illegal google fame calculator as well. Bastards!
